My husband and I visited HH last week for our 1 year anniversary and wanted to have a nice meal out on the day commemorating our glorious event. We saw an article in a local food magazine boasting of this restraunt being rated #1 by this magazine and #1 by that magazine, so we thought why not. Upon arriving I was a little skittish with the location in the middle of a strip mall, but it was pretty busy so I saw that as a good sign. The restaurant itself is small, no more than 15 tables or so, and all but 3 were full. A group of 4 people were being sat just as we walked in. The 3 open tables consisted of two small 2 tops in the walk way right in front of the host stand and a 4 top back by the wall. Ideally we would have preferred the 4 top so we could have a little privacy. The man attending the floor who could possibly have been the owner approached us and appeared to be irriated that he had to seat us. He pointed at the empty table directly in front of the host stand and told us that was the only open table. It wasn't, but we are very laid back and took our seat. The man then went to take the drink orders of the table sat before us so we waited patiently. I noticed that the walls were very cluttered, and the floors looked as though they had not been swept in 3 days, filthy. The menu seemed to have a nice selection and reasonably priced, and everyone around us seemed happy with their wine and cleaned plates. Upon a closer look at the menu, they note that if you would like to purchase a franchise it will be $50,000, tacky I thought. It also stated that if you are viewing a movie or going to the theater after dinner to alert the wait staff, which says to me they are slower than crap and we were going to be there forever. We waited 10 minutes and had yet to have our drink orders taken. The gentlman working the floor was behind the bar, appeared to be taking inventory of his liquor. There was one other waitress assisting the tables that had already received their food. I advised my husband that if our drink orders were not taken the next five minutes we would be leaving. I watched the gentleman go in and out of the kitchen twice and go on about his business behind the bar. I'd had it. After almost 20 minutes of no service and all of the negative things I had notice, we got up and left. We went to Aunt Chilladas, which was amazing.

A couple of weeks ago my husband and I spent a long weekend in Hilton Head on our honeymoon and decided to start the celebration by going out to dinner the night we arrived. We decided on Tapas since we both like Spanish food. Even though the restaurant was full, they were able to seat us at the bar which I thought was nice. Since this is a wine bar, I didn't expect their beer selection to be great but when you ask the bartender for their dark beers and he responds "Bass" you know something isn't right. Then again, like I just mentioned this is a wine bar therefore not knowing which beers are dark and failing to have a good beer selection aren't major crimes. Then the food came. The crab cake that I ordered was mediocre at best but wasn't a complete lost since the sweet potato fries it came with were amazing. The duck in grand marnier that my husband ordered was a piece of frozen meat swimming in a goo sauce. To say it was terrible would be a compliment. Although, not as terrible as the Venison in white wine. The piece of venison was so over cooked, it had this chewy burnt consistency to it and it was also swimming in a goo sauce. This restaurant was very expensive and it definitely failed to deliver. Next time we are in HH, we are definitely not coming here again.

I give this place four stars, but I will say that there is something off kilter about this place. I'm not sure I've put my finger on it after giving it some thought. Our server was not what I expect from a Tapas restaurant. There was nothing Latin about her. She was pure South. The menu wasn't quite either. For one, it's too big for such a small restaurant. Also, I didn't see traditional Spanish items on the menu. Then there were warnings about when and how much they'd assess the gratuity and to tell them to speed up if going to a show. What? We in a theater district? This is the beach! No hurries here. The decor was quirky. It was dominated by collections - different cutsy salt and pepper shakers on each table were kitsch. The table wear was mismatched. Cook books dominated many areas. Plates hung on the walls almost awkwardly. But the food nudged me from being off kilter to on-kilter. It was just nice. It was good. I left happy. Starters: Pot stickers and a Mushroom and Artichoke Fromage Dip. The pot stickers were AOK but the dip was incredible. Thanks to the owner for not skimping. Oh, and this was served with the most amazing bread. It's baked in house. Our mains were the lamb chops, the Greek Shrimp, the Coquille a la Creme and Filet Mignon Bordelaise. Each of them blew us away. Wonderful and flavorful and we all shared bites, envied each others order but went back to our own. The Filet Mignon was too heavy after a day at the beach but I should have known that before ordering. My fault. We followed this up with a pecan dessert that was the best pecan pie I've ever tasted. There was a certain creaminess that felt insanely good in the mouth. And all at a price that didn't make me say ouch. In fact, before ordering I was suspicious that the name Tapas was just a way of saying small portions. They weren't small. I got my money's worth. Like I said, the restaurant put me off a bit. Maybe there's a lack of theme going on. But the theme of the food was perfect - fresh, flavorful. Finally, no TVs in the place. That was nice.

It's hard to describe how amazing this place was. When we walked, I felt like I was being welcomed into someone's home. The decor is so cute and interesting. The service was great!! But really, the food is the best part. We ordered fried green tomatoes and I had the Wild Porcini Ravioli. Both dishes were so good!! The ravioli was so rich I could only eat 2/3 of it and the dishes are a bit expensive, but it didn't matter because it was all so fantastic!! I even gave in to sharing dessert with my boyfriend because I knew I wouldn't regret it. We ordered the pecan pie. This was a great dining experience while on vacation!

Tapas is hard to explain. There is so much potential but it falls short. When we we arrived there was only 2 tables in the restaurant and 2 servers. The decor in the restaurant was really strange. Cookbooks all over the walls and in no particular order. I know they are trying to do the "home cooked southern thing" but it just wasn't working with the name of the restaurant. An older man (I think it was the owner) kept coming up to tables asking if they needed anything. At first it was nice of him but I kept noticing him continuing to do it and even heard him say "I'm really bored." haha it was kind of strange. The food ended up actually being very good that is was I was disappointed in the rest of the experience. My boyfriend and I both ordered different tilapias that were delicious! Overall the actual food was great here! The dining experience was kind of strange. Again lots of potential but tapas falls a little short.

Visited in June and was on cloud nine after dining at Tapas Restaurant. Just died and went to heaven while feasting on croquille scallops (can not remember actual name). OMG was that good. Did no mind too much that the wait staff gave herself a 25% tip (even if we always tip 20%). ;)

Wonderful meal and superior service! The atmosphere is charming and welcoming. Would be the perfect date night choice. It will be on my must visit list our next trip here as it is a wonderful alternative to standard chain restaurant food.

This is my favorite place to go eat when I come to the island for vacation. Everyone is so friendly...they treat you like family. The She-Crab Soup is amazing and the lamb chops and lobster thermidor is some of the best you will ever have. When you go you must save room for the creme brûlée...it will change your life. I can't recommend this place enough!! Also, I love the new location. Very nice!!

How disappointing We gave it a second chance but never again. Food was over-flavored and not great quality. The chicken dish had over powering oregano. Coconut shrimp poor flavoring. Greek shrimp overly spiced and shrimp poor quality. New smaller location but the chef just doesn't have it.

I consider Tapas Restaurant to be a hidden gem on Hilton Head Island. Thankfully, they moved from Northridge Plaza to their new location in the Sam's Club shopping center. This will only help them get on the culinary map of the island. The food is all small plate and quite good. It's fun to order a bunch of plates and share with your dining partners. We started with the She Crab Soup which was rich and decadent. I ordered a ricotta and spinach ravioli in a garlic artichoke cream sauce. It was outstanding. Interesting mix of sweet cream garlic, and the tartness of artichoke. I truly loved this. For our main course, I ordered the short ribs over smashed potatoes. Wonderfully seasoned, the meat was incredibly tender and pulled easily off of the bone. It was all very good. We left full with happy bellies. Try Tapas Restaurant, you won't be disappointed!

Good, but not great. Nothing spectacular about the experience.

Everything was great! Excellent food and friendly service. We had she crab soup; crab rangoon, grand marnier duck, Greek shrimp, fried green tomatoes, herb roasted potatoes and a dish made with pork, artichoke hearts, tomatoes and pasta. We will go back next vacation!
